A really awesome experience which mainly is credited to the professor. Very attentive, helpful and informative professor.
Diana Ascher had a lot of amazing qualities as a teacher. She was extremely organized and clear. She facilitated class discussion by challenging us with interesting questions. She demanded a manageable workload that integrated creative projects with critical-thinking writing pieces. She motivates her students to be engaged with the reading material and in-class discussions.
Diana was a great instructor. Her care and interest in her students, her knowledge and perspective in the subject, and her ability to keep her students engaged were only among many other extraordinary characteristics she possessed that make her a wonderful instructor. I appreciated the focus on
completion and participation with regards to the assignments. I felt like alleviating the worry associated with grades allowed me to focus on the absorbing information and developing relevant opinions. I preferred the readings toward the middle of quarter. I also thought it was great that the course was front-loaded - very helpful. I appreciated that the class was set up as a discussion, because I never had to urge to fall asleep. Additionally, Diana's lectures were great. She's a captivating speaker. It was really
cool to recognize that Diana was just as eager (if not more) to learn from us as we were from her. Thank you for an awesome quarter!
I really enjoyed the discussion style of this course.
It was a little strange how a TA taught the entire course, and Prof. Lievrouw only taught once. However, TA Diana Ascher was an amazing instructor and I enjoyed the class very much. She deserves the highest praise for running the discussions, challenging our thinking, and opening our minds to new and interesting topics.
Professor Diane considered all our ideas, gave us platforms to participate, knew her content really well, and always encouraged to look further into the subject. Even the additional content she posted on the discussion forums was always fun.
Provoked engaging discussions and cared about our interest in the subject. There were classes where the material seemed repetitive because certain articles were similar and students gave the same opinion multiple times.
She is a great teacher, definitely shows that she cares deeply for every student.
Students were able to bring up discussion question and comments during the class and that made the class more interesting and challenging. Students were also put into groups to present topics about the weeks readings and this helped further my understanding about the readings and the topics that were presented in class.
Thank you for the wonderful course you had provided. I learned so much about the development of Internet and beyond the superficial knowledge. I really appreciated how the professor instructed the class. Can't be better!
The class exceeds my expectation in every aspect. One thing I love about this class is the group projects we have, it gives me a lens to see the materials through.
The instructor was very knowledgeable, engaging and helpful. Some of the readings for this course were repetitive and/or technical, and they did not help much in my understanding of the concepts. However, the instructor explained all the concepts very well during lectures. The group activities and discussions we had were very helpful in understanding the course material, too. Having to present in front of the class also increased my confidence.
The strengths was that the class was interesting and the weakness is that the professor was never there and made it hard to go to office hours. Another weakness is that the course didn't really help people who were new beginners in the class. There would be times where I couldn't engage in discussion because I did not know what was going on or what we were talking about.
This class was one of the few classes I took at UCLA where I was able to just focus on learning new things and thinking about the course material rather than trying to absorb every little detail in the readings or lecture materials. Consequently, the class was very enjoyable, and I strongly feel that I have gained valuable and essential knowledge that has broadened my understanding of the modern society. One room for improvement would be to make the class a little more focused. It was great that the class was driven mainly through discussions, but I felt that sometimes the discussion digressed a bit too far from the main topic of discussion. I think it would be helpful if we were given mini lectures or some sort of "preview" that introduces the main themes and focus of the session before we begin discussing the readings. The group presentation of readings/articles was great. Overall, I feel that I have made the right choice in taking this class this quarter and I have definitely developed a new perspective in viewing the world I live in today, as well as in thinking about the future of our (digital) society. Again, I think I have definitely learned something valuable in this class and would like to thank Diana for a great class this quarter.
This was my favorite course this quarter. It was interesting, thought provoking, and fun. I would suggest that they narrow down the amount of readings. Some of the pieces were repetitive or to technical for the discussions we had in class.
One of the best class i ever taken here at ucla. The professor provided a rich atmosphere of open discussions. I've learnt so much from the broad scope of the topics and the way she taught gave me more confidence and motivation to do more reading and thinking.
