Bibliometric approach

The analysis of the statistical properties of information is seen to provide understanding of value for both the design of information provision and the theoretical understanding of social processes around information, including historical processes. The earliest theory was provided by Bradford (1948) and Zipf (1949). More recent major work has been done by Brookes (1968), Price (1986), Small (1999), and White & McCain (1998), among others. Much of this work has been made possible through the existence of citation indexes (Garfield, 1983).
