Thank you for a wonderful quarter! I’d like to think I’m a pretty smart student, and yet, the class was actually really challenging for me but I’m still glad I took it. It challenged me to think about a lot of subjects that I normally wouldn’t have given much thought to. I think this is […]
I want to thank you for the wonderful quarter. I thoroughly enjoyed your class and am recommending it to all of my friends (I actually even brought a friend with me to the election class!). It was very clear that you love the field you’re in, and that always makes for a pleasant time on […]
I really enjoyed this class. The things we learned were relevant to current events, and made me a more educated person on today’s society (rather than just learning math equations or about some random event thousands of years ago).
I really enjoyed this class especially it made it think about the fields that I have never even thought of. I learned a lot especially how to think critically and such which will definitely help me a lot in the future.
I first came into this course with an intent to just pass as a GE. I mean that’s still the goal, however I learned a lot of valuable information about information itself. A lot of these I learned were shockingly relevant to my daily life and has kept me woke. I would take this course […]
The strenght of the course is going into important societal problems. The weakness is not stating that this is the primary purpose of the course. [sic]
Professor Ascher inspired new perspective on subjects related to technology, social issues, the internet, and many other facets of modern society. This class provided a setting for the discussion of events and topic as well as the basic role of information in society. A weakness of this class is likely the fact that some issues […]
I really enjoyed this course and Ms. Ascher’s teaching methods. She navigated controversial issues very expertly explaining her views and reasoning while remaining open to dissenting opinions. It really felt like this course emphasized understanding over assignments which I found very refreshing. Criteria for assignments could have been more clear, but Ms. Ascher’s grading style […]
Professor Ascher led a wonderful discussion during each class period. Her insight was extremely insightful and I can honestly say I gained a lot from her class.
I really enjoyed this class. As an engineering major, I found the topics covered in class outside my comfort zone and learned a good amount in terms of how knowledge is acquired and distributed.
I have really enjoyed this class and learning from Professor Ascher.
I absolutely loved this course and my professor. (The written assignment and presentation have yet to have been graded, so I cannot attest to the fairness in grading. Although, there should be more clarity in the rubric/criteria for grading these large projects.) This is probably one of my favorite classes in my four years at […]
Awesome Instructor who is very knowledgeable and passionate about everything within the scope of this class. Very relevant to everyone. If anything maybe the description or name of the course could be something more appealing. Honestly wasn’t sure what I was signing up for, but this is by far the best GE class I have […]
Ms. Ascher provoked intriguing conversations and made me open my mind and think more about the society around me.
This course is very interesting in that for 3.5 hours in the late night have not made me fall asleep once. The discussions were very well facilitated and ideas and anecdotes were thrown back and forth in the class with interesting pace. The presentations were well organized and theories were clearly presented with videos and […]
One of the best class i ever taken here at ucla. The professor provided a rich atmosphere of open discussions. I’ve learnt so much from the broad scope of the topics and the way she taught gave me more confidence and motivation to do more reading and thinking.
This was my favorite course this quarter. It was interesting, thought provoking, and fun. I would suggest that they narrow down the amount of readings. Some of the pieces were repetitive or to technical for the discussions we had in class.
This class was one of the few classes I took at UCLA where I was able to just focus on learning new things and thinking about the course material rather than trying to absorb every little detail in the readings or lecture materials. Consequently, the class was very enjoyable, and I strongly feel that I […]
The strengths was that the class was interesting and the weakness is that the professor was never there and made it hard to go to office hours. Another weakness is that the course didn’t really help people who were new beginners in the class. There would be times where I couldn’t engage in discussion because […]
The instructor was very knowledgeable, engaging and helpful. Some of the readings for this course were repetitive and/or technical, and they did not help much in my understanding of the concepts. However, the instructor explained all the concepts very well during lectures. The group activities and discussions we had were very helpful in understanding the […]
The class exceeds my expectation in every aspect. One thing I love about this class is the group projects we have, it gives me a lens to see the materials through.
Thank you for the wonderful course you had provided. I learned so much about the development of Internet and beyond the superficial knowledge. I really appreciated how the professor instructed the class. Can’t be better!
Students were able to bring up discussion question and comments during the class and that made the class more interesting and challenging. Students were also put into groups to present topics about the weeks readings and this helped further my understanding about the readings and the topics that were presented in class.
She is a great teacher, definitely shows that she cares deeply for every student.
Provoked engaging discussions and cared about our interest in the subject. There were classes where the material seemed repetitive because certain articles were similar and students gave the same opinion multiple times.
Professor Diane considered all our ideas, gave us platforms to participate, knew her content really well, and always encouraged to look further into the subject. Even the additional content she posted on the discussion forums was always fun.
It was a little strange how a TA taught the entire course, and Prof. Lievrouw only taught once. However, TA Diana Ascher was an amazing instructor and I enjoyed the class very much. She deserves the highest praise for running the discussions, challenging our thinking, and opening our minds to new and interesting topics.
I really enjoyed the discussion style of this course.
Diana was a great instructor. Her care and interest in her students, her knowledge and perspective in the subject, and her ability to keep her students engaged were only among many other extraordinary characteristics she possessed that make her a wonderful instructor. I appreciated the focus on completion and participation with regards to the assignments. […]
Diana Ascher had a lot of amazing qualities as a teacher. She was extremely organized and clear. She facilitated class discussion by challenging us with interesting questions. She demanded a manageable workload that integrated creative projects with critical-thinking writing pieces. She motivates her students to be engaged with the reading material and in-class discussions.
A really awesome experience which mainly is credited to the professor. Very attentive, helpful and informative professor.
